General Information

Age: Classes are intended for participants 16 years and older unless otherwise noted. (Centennial Farm is open to the public, but we ask that you do not leave your children unattended on the farm.)

Location: Silo Building at Centennial Farm, 88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa, CA 92626.

Cost: Fees for each class vary and are noted in the class description.


Homegrown Tomatoes

Homegrown Tomatoes

About the Class:

If there is just one edible plant that you should choose to grow at home, it is the tomato. Nowhere else is the contrast in flavor, nutrition and variety between homegrown and store-bought more evident. This how-to presentation will provide all the practical knowledge necessary to begin growing tomatoes. You will see tomato plants with 50 to more than 100 tomatoes on each plant. Learn which varieties to grow, how to plant and care for tomatoes and common diseases and pests that afflict them. Bring your questions and learn how to grow tomatoes easily!

About the Speakers:

Dave Freed, “The Tomato Guy,” researches, educates and helps other backyard farmers successfully propagate the ever-popular homegrown tomato. Every year, Dave grows a variety of hybrids, heirlooms, cherry and beefsteak tomatoes in both containers and regular backyard soil. He always has plenty of tomatoes and is always happy to share his tips. Check out Dave’s website, where more than 150,000 people have learned his tips.

$10 fee covers materials and any handouts. Refund policy – There will be NO refunds for cancellations made within 48 hours of a class. For cancellations made prior, only the class fee will be refunded (not booking fees).

Organic Gardening

Integrating Organic Practices Into Your Garden

About the Class:

Why is organic gardening important? It’s essential for supporting Mother Nature, maintaining a healthy ecosystem and ensuring our well-being. Healthy soil is the foundation of all life on Earth, and incorporating organic methods can rejuvenate your gardens, lawns and landscapes, making them more resilient to pests and diseases. This class will discuss the advantages of organic versus synthetic approaches and how they affect soil health, plant growth and the safety of your family and the environment. In addition, the speaker will discuss how to seek safe garden products to protect your family, pets and the environment.

About the Speakers:

Gisele is the organic educator for Kellogg Garden Products and has over 35 years in the garden industry. She earned her undergraduate degree in ornamental horticulture from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. She has owned an interior-scape company, worked for the State Department of Agriculture, practiced as a horticultural therapist with senior citizens and launched an outstanding sales career by helping establish top-selling organic gardening products. Gisele has accumulated a wide range of experience and knowledge that she enjoys sharing in her educational programs.

Blooms for Mom: A Mother’s Day Floral Arrangement Workshop

Led by certified floral designer Marie Gregory, you’ll learn how to create a striking floral arrangement. Whether you’re a seasoned floral enthusiast or a beginner, this class will equip you with the skills, supplies and inspiration to make and take home a memorable Mother’s Day gift. From selecting the right flowers to mastering the art of arrangement, you’ll leave this workshop with a gorgeous bouquet and the confidence to continue your floral design journey. This class is perfect for signing up with a friend or loved one to double the fun!

About the Speakers:

Marie Gregory AIFD, CFD, is an accomplished professional floral designer with experience in every field of floral design and a specialty in wedding florals. As a freelance designer, her custom arrangements and stylish designs have brightened homes, offices, holiday and community events and wedding ceremonies (700 happy couples and counting) for over 30 years. In December, she lends her talents to the Rose Parade floats for Fiesta Float Company and Centennial Farm for our popular Winter Wreath workshops! She is also a board director for the Southwest chapter of the American Institute of Floral Design and a certified floral evaluator and judge, having served as a judge at the Orange County and San Diego County fairs.

Tools & materials:

$75 fee covers materials (including vase) and any handouts. Participants should bring floral shears/scissors and gloves. Additional decorative accents will be limited – feel free to bring your own to personalize your arrangement. Please note that your finished work may vary from the pictured arrangement due to your personal style.

Refund policy – Due to the need to order materials in advance, there will be NO refunds for cancellations to this class unless made by Centennial Farm staff.

Cancellation policy – Should the class not reach minimum enrollment (12 participants) by May 1, the class will be canceled and participants refunded.

Join Marie Gregory, certified floral designer, and seasoned floral arrangement judge at the annual OC Fair, for a hands-on class that will elevate your floral design skills. If you have struggled to create a winning floral arrangement or aspire to enter a floral design competition such as those in the Garden & Floral Department at the annual OC Fair, this class is for you!
